School Bus Accidents
When your child goes off to school, you expect them to be safe. You also expect that the ride to school will be safe, but school buses are no more immune to accidents than your average car.
The parents of the children who were injured in the school bus accident on eastbound I-44 in Villa Ridge, Missouri, know this all too well. Over 50 people were injured, and two teenagers were killed, when a semi truck tractor cab with no trailer came to a stop in the right lane causing a chain reaction on August 5, 2010. The stopped tractor cab caused a pick-up truck to rear end it, which was then rear ended by the school bus following it. A second school bus also crashed into the back of the first school bus.
School bus accidents are a parent's worst nightmare. They often leave emotional scars coupled with physical injuries. Not all injuries are sustained by the passengers in the school bus, either. Often times, pedestrians, children at a bus stop, or other drivers are hurt in school bus accidents.
Anything can cause a school bus accident. Driver fatigue is common, as are improperly maintained vehicles. Drivers who have not been thoroughly background checked may cause accidents by being under the influence of legal or illegal substances, such as drugs or alcohol, or by not following the rules of the road. Poorly maintained roads are also often to blame.
