SUV Rollover Accidents
SUVs have become the darlings of America. They are convenient, get better gas mileage than pick-up trucks, and can still haul cargo or people. SUVs are also prone to rollover accidents due to their high center of gravity and heavy tops.
Rollover accidents account for less than 5% of all accidents, but over 30% of all car accident fatalities. Rollover car accidents usually only involve one vehicle, but can be part of a multi-vehicle accident and are most often caused by "tripping," where a vehicle's tire hits an object and the momentum forces it to roll over.
Tire failure can also cause a vehicle to rollover. This week, an SUV blew a tire on I-95 in Florida, causing the driver to lose control and roll his Ford Expedition. Five adults were killed, and four children were taken to the hospital, but only two victims were wearing seatbelts.
Poor road maintenance can sometimes be to blame for rollover accidents, as well. If potholes, soft shoulders, or loose gravel are not addressed by the local government, rollover accidents are more likely to occur.
