Burns from Car Accidents

We rely on our cars and trucks to take us to work, school, on vacations, and even for a quick trip to the store. Cars make our lives easier, but they can still be very dangerous. In 2008 alone, vehicle accidents claimed over 34,000 lives. While both blunt trauma and crushing force are dangers, victims of car accidents must also worry about fires and burns. Burn injuries are among the most severe types of car accident injuries.

Car fires are the second leading cause of fire-related deaths, next to residential fires. An estimated 50 fatalities and 3,000 injuries each year are incurred due to car fires.

Fires in vehicles can start as the result of several different scenarios, including:

  • Mechanical or electrical system failures
  • Car crashes
  • Cigarettes or other flaming objects being dropped onto upholstery

Cars are made up of many flammable materials, including upholstery, wires, and a tank full of gasoline. Other flammable liquids, such as coolant, are also key components to running a vehicle. Normally, the combustible materials are kept away from sparks or other ignition sources, but extreme heat or the impact from a car accident can corrode insulation and cause vapors or liquids to ignite. Car fires are difficult to escape, and often result in burns and smoke inhalation.
